Malcolm, mine appear to be sealed units, and I have not tried to open one as they are all still working.

When they do die, I will take the dremel to one and see if I can replace the battery...

I was unaware that some TPMS's are sealed and other are not.......

Looks like I purchased the wrong system - mine were sealed units and when the batteries died I was told that I had to purchase new senders at almost the same cost as a new TPMS. Schoolfees.

Message for TPMS investors - make sure the batteries are replaceable.

Yes, they screw on in place of valve caps. When the battery (CR 1632) goes flat, you unscrew the sensor's cap and replace the battery.

The name is Tireguard and their website is www.tireguard.co.za and they cost about R2250 for a system with 6 sensors, 4 for the car and two for the trailer or caravan. Alternatively one for the spare tyre and a spare sensor.

Extra sensors are available at R230 ea and it is wise to order extra batteries when you buy the kit at R5.00 each (yes, only five Rand each, can you believe it?). Imagine how the guys who fit our watch batteries rip us off when they charge us R50 ea!!

You can either collect or he can send it via courier at R100 per delivery. The monitor is slightly bigger than a match box and you can order a separate cradle (like a GPS suction cap type cradle) for R70.

I ordered a set each for my Pathfinder and my Patrol. For the Patrol I did the modification Abraham suggested, where you fit an extra valve (have a hole drilled in the rim) on the brake caliper side (ie inside) of the rim, but close the the spokes so that the calipers don't "klap" the sensor. It is suggested to fit one of those valves with the really short stem or the bent steel valves.

You can actually have 18 sensors on the Tireguard system, it was originally made for trucks with trailers
