Rims

Post by dsquared »

All of the original rims on my '95 GQ have perished. They developed leaks between the bit that you attach to the wheels and the bit that the tyre sits on.
I have replaced them with standard white epoxy coated steel rims but these are a fraction too small to fit comfortably over the rear hubs and need a good amount of extra effort to tighten and to loosen.
Anyone else with the same problem and how did you solve it please?
Thanks
David

Howzit dsquared,

A bit of research (patrol4x4.com :) ) shows that Landcruiser 80 series rims fit the GQ but the centre hole is a tad too small. I confirmed this when I tried to fit a friend's 80 series wheels on my GQ... So your problem is not new. A file should do the trick to remove to some offending metal off the rim.

Morning SGL pre 1997 users, I had the same problem on my rims. I found the answer on the nissan4x4 site, the original owner I think Eddie of TWT said one must clean the inside of the rim properly ( sandpaper etc ) wait to dry then you buy a normal can of spraypaint give the rim a good spray on areas of leak which you identified obviously beforehand. Replace the tyre and fill with air. The air will force the spraypaint into the cracks and problem solved. I did it on 3 of my rims and now 2years down the line no problem with leaking rims.

The tyre place where I did it the owner thought I was totally off my rocker when I said that is what must be done, also when you balance the wheels it must be done on a cone ( like an icecream cone - please just eat the icecream first )

Hi Jules,

That sounds like a plan!
So for the spraypaint to fill in the cracks, you must fit tyre and inflate while the spraypaint is still wet?

Jules,

That is very smart and you have just saved me R500 which is what a new "white" rim costs.

Brilliant.

Thanks
