New Tyres

Post by stefnie »

Hi Guys, time to put new tyres on! In 2005 I fitted 265/75/16 A/T Cooper Discover A/T tyres. They lasted about 80 000km but are now finished. I learned to my shock that tyre life expectancy is max about 6 years! All these years they handled exceptionally well in Botswana, Richtersveld etc.
I travel very little now, about 6000km per year and do not wish to fork out a lot of money on a decent tyre, yet I still want a good enough tyre.I also tow an Explorer caravan.
Brands and prices so far: 265/75/16 A/T
Dunlop Grand Trek A/T 3 - R1950-00
Kenda Klever - R 1900-00 - Chinese made.

Anybody that can recommend a tyre that sits in above price bracket?
Opinions and experience with different makes will be welcome

Thanks.
Christo Muller.

DUNLOP Grandtrek AT22

I have this tyre and it good value for money and it was designed for the land cruiser and Nissan Japan offers it as the only optional factory specked tyre for the Nissan patrol that I could find.
Its made in JAPAN.

I've also been "watching" the prices for replacement tyres for my Jalopy. I'm not in your size range, but my tyres that I swear by, has gone totally bonkers on price at R3600 per tyre.EDIT, just checked Errols site, and found that my size is now R4061 each.

So checking out Errols tyres, I did the cheapskate sort from cheapest to unobtainable, and these came up very well priced (R2512).

But I have no idea as to how these things handle and what mileage I can expect. Another Forum member ran into an Eskom employee who has them on his truck, and tells us that they hardly gave him 40K km. Now my KL71's gave me 86K with horrible IFS problems, so even at double the price, it seems a better option. Only problem is, that when you need to purchase six tyres, it breaks the bank at R24500.

Then there is the General Grabber in my size for 2043. Nice price and it seemed to be ok... Was it not the tyre that they put on the Frotuner to stop it from paying dead.

Any idea what Kilos I can expect from them.

The first option nearly looks the part for me, not really aggressive enough, but will do. The beeeg question is, how do they handle on tar, especially wet tar. My KL71's were an improvement on any of the other AT and HT tyres I ever had, just not sure how other MT's compare.

Hell Cedric, life's difficult when you have had the opportunity to experience the bees knees, but now have to settle for second best, what are you running on your rig???
