If manufactured / designed correctly, you can get around the problem of putting BM on the studs and leave them working in shear only, bit as PC pointed out, the increased leverarm will induce substantially bigger loads on the bearings - also on the studs, even if the the spacers are designed so that only shear forces are transferred by the studs. However, will it induce more loading on the axle or the halfshafts as well?
The same effect can happen when fitting rims with a different offset!

I had a very slow loss of air, it took 2 weeks for the tyre pressure to drop to about a bar. After taking it to 2 places, the leak was between the seat of the tyre and the rim, i had the tyre removed, the rim of the tyre and the wheel inner cleaned and problem solved. I can only think that a grain of sand worked its way under the tyre somehow.
