Re: WegRy/Drive Out AT Tyre Test
Firstly, I must admit to not having read this test, but only having heard and read about it.
My opinion is that this tire test only tested half (or even less) of the attributes that make up the gamut of tire performance. I understand that a lot of the other attributes are difficult to test repeatably, but that does not mean that you can take them out of consideration.
Also, there is no such thing as a "best tire", in the same way as there is no such thing as a "best car". Only when you accurately define what the purpose/intended use is, can a decision be reached.
In other words, you need to decide carefully exactly what it is you want to do with the tires, to be able to choose the right tire for the job.
In this way, if you put a lot of focus on feul economy and road-holding, but do not test off-road ability "because it is not repeatable", you might well come to the conclusion that the Subaru Impreza is the best 4x4 on the market, but just one day at Berakah and you will change your mind quickly.
BF all terrains are currently very expensive, and are th most off-road-bieased of all the current A/T tires. As a result, they have very deep treads (about 60% more than many of the competitors) and also a fairly hard compound and costruction. As a result, they do not fare well in the type of tests applied here, and thus their low ranking is not really surprising.
On the other hand, they are just about the toughest and longest-lasting A/T tire out there, and surely this must count for something? I am not saying that road-holding is not important, but on the other hand, the Patrol is already bad at that. If you know the limits and are prepared to live within them, you will be fine. If you are not prepared to live within those limits, then you need different equipment, but you will be compromising something somewhere along the line.

Re: WegRy/Drive Out AT Tyre Test
Yes I agree. With these Tire tests they used the same pressure for all tires and we all know in reality their construction and stiffness of sidewalls differ vastly. I can run my BFG KM2's at 1.6 bar and they don't even look flat while some other makes look deflated at 2 bar!
This has a huge impact on traction and performance

Re: WegRy/Drive Out AT Tyre Test
My 2 cents worth, debating tyres is like the debate on which bakkie is best!!!!
My own experience is that I have done 105 000 KM's on BFG AT's ( on my hardbody) and they are good for atleast another 10 000 and not one puncture. On my Patrol I also have BFG AT's with 30 000 so far and no punctures. Both vehicles have been around Nam & Bots many times without incidence.
My next tyres will be BFG's
On a ligher note, have you read the article on news 24 re Ford Ranger out sells Hilux in October. The comments are amusing.!!!!

Re: WegRy/Drive Out AT Tyre Test
This is OT, but if Ranger outsells Hillux, it effectively means that they have been outselling Hillux for a while now.
Half of the Yota sales are replacements for stolen vehicles!

Re: WegRy/Drive Out AT Tyre Test
Babelaas, I agree in the old days I used to fit the General RV180 (don't know why they stopped making it!!!) I love the BF's I have a set on my Disco 2 and the Patrol, I have only had one set of Muds (on my green patrol) and I don't have a problem with them but the road noise drives me nuts! I have had some Wranglers and Duelers over the years but I would still put BF's at the top of my list Last forever, quiet, good offroad and do not puncture easly, I have never had a problem with grip, (wet or dry) only problem I have with them is price!!!

Re: WegRy/Drive Out AT Tyre Test
Ian - my driving style must then be more aggressive than yours or it rains more in the Cape but I am with you on the road noise from muddies - take some time to get used to especially if you had H/T's on previously!
I had the A/T's on my old Safari and on the 4.8 and found that the BFG A/T's had pieces chipped off during my Kaokoland and northern Namibia trips. My tires tread looked like they were shot at with a shot-gun
They looked much like these: BFG Impressions I hope the new ones don't do similar but they say with the new KO2 you get double the tread life on gravel. The toughness is improved by 20% In comparison to the KO tire it replaces, the KO2 has:
twice the tread life on gravel;
15% longer tread life on asphalt;
10% better traction in mud;
19% improved traction in snow; and
20% more resistance to sidewall splitting.

My I kindly ask, howw got these percentages measured?
That 19% improved traction in snow seems spurious. Do you not have confidencde intervals for these better inproved numbers?
