Ok.... as the subject suggests, I want to fit my second battery under the Iron Maiden. Google wasn't my friend on this search, and managed to fins a little info on the Aussie site. I got a reply, believe it or not from a fellow South African guy....ha ha, who posted a link to a photo of what he had done.

That is an excellent idea. The only issues are of course risk of damage and access when one wants to check the battery etc. But there really is no better plan I think. I saw the one behind the quarter panel as well but I think that that is less optimal than this solution. I need to climbing under my GRX and have a look and see where the equivalent space might be. If anyone is planning on making up those battery trays, please remember to include me in the order list! :-)

Yeah, I'm not keen on having a battery sitting in the cabin, even though the battery is a sealed unit, it just gives me the hibby gibbies. I agree, a little extra protection to the sides with a flap opening door to remove the battery would be perfect.

Just use a lead cristal they are the correct one for the job

My current battery is still perfect.... not going to spend R3k or more for a new battery at the moment. The engine bay gets VERY hot and my Ctek registers temps higher than 50deg C and shuts off the charging to the battery. On our recent trip I could n't even rest my hand on the battery it was so hot..... this is not good for any battery irrespective of type. And besides I can then use that space for either compressor, or even fit a nice big air filter like whats in the 4.8 instead of the ZD30 airbox they fit when there is a turbo on the 4.2 diesels

I am going to do the same thing. Lots of space under the troll. Just the protection and correct location needs to be fine tuned.

Just for starters....

Basic 25 x 25 angle iron frame work, with a slot in the front to allow the floor plate with water drain holes to slide out. Steel plate halfway up sides for protection and strength. Open side fixes to chassis.
To fit the battery in...

1) Battery clamp height to be adjusted and locked at correct height for battery on the threaded rod. This will be the rod closest to the chassis. The rod is fixed permanently to the top of the angle iron frame and to the bottom of the angle iron frame. Once this height is set you shouldn't need to worry with that again.
2) A little strength needed to lift the battery into the box from the bottom, and then slide the base plate in to hold everything in place. The second threaded rod fits into the hole in the bottom of the box opposite side to chassis and through the bracket that will hold the battery down. This also secures the base plate in place. There is a slot cut out of the base plate that the battery sits on.
3) Tighten bolt on the threaded rod to clamp the battery. If space allows a nut can be secured to the top of the threaded rod to secure the threaded rod in place.
4) Slap a bolt or padlock to lock the base plate ( double security )

When you have it all figured out, I will drop by so that you can fit one on my Troll as a test subject

I would suggest we make the box water tight with a breather. Also if possible have a side panel on hinges so easy access to terminals. I will also have a cut out switch in the cabin area so it can be isolated should something go wrong.
