I think it's idiotic. My experience has been that people look at the upper lights, not the lower ones, with the result that they don't realize you're about to turn or are stopping. It's a real safety hazard.

i also think that safety will be enhanced by activating the larger upper lights.

Hi Guys, After purchasing my 2001Patrol GL I noticed the collumb lights were dummys and found it rather odd and bothersome, I set out to rectify it.
I just got 6 sets of regular trailer lights, cut out the holes on the dummy lights and figured out the wiring for each function. So now she looks like a christmas tree when applying brakes or indicating.
top red lense for taillights and brakes
white lense for reverse
bottom red lenses as indicators
Also did the mod in such a way that the bottom bumper lights still work as per standard.

Can anyone tell me how to get the light cluster out? I tried unscrewing some nuts and things but no joy.

Clem, have a look at this thread:
http://patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=848&

It is about the clacking barn doors, but the tail lamps need to come out for that fix. There are pins that clip into the bodywork in addition to the screws. Unfortunately the pictures are all dead now (due to a forum software upgrade mishap a while back, I think), but perhaps the words can help, at least if you have an earlier (up to 2004) Y61.

With many thanks to all here I have now solved this with a set of replacement tails lights from GNV Auto. When I took them out the box the removal and fitment was obvious and took about 3 minutes per set.
