TD42 Blowing smoke

Post by Wiseacts »

Hello folks..
What does it mean blowing black smoke from exhaust. Specially when A/C is on? Took to a diesel repare shop had my feul pump checked as well as the injector nozzles clean. Still same problem.
Now started to see slight smoke blowing from cylinder head when opening oil inlet cover. Thanks
P.S. eats diesel like crazy.

Firstly ... Welcome to the Patrol Forum !!

Ok...
Is it a n/a diesel or is there a turbo on it?
Is there an EGT( Exhaust Gas Temp ) gauge already fitted?
If so what are the max temps you reach on a flat road, and under load on an uphill in 5th?
Does it blow black smoke constantly, or only when you accelerate or put the motor under load?
What size tyres are you running?

Black smoke means that the diesel is not being utilized 100%. It is being burnt, but not efficiently. This tells me that you are over-fueling so wasting diesel and making it thirsty. When you let us know the answers to the questions above, then we can offer some advice. There are a lot of clever guys here on the forum that can help.

PS...post a pic of your Patrol for us to see !! :gotpics: :gotpics:

Thanks mate!
It's a non-turboed TD42.."transplant in replacement of a Zd30" It blows black smoke when accelerating and/or putting the motor under load as well as when A/C is on.

I am running 275/70 R16 sized tyres, 2.5" ARB lift kit.
As you said.. I feel over feuling.. As consumption has increased drastically..

What do you think as well blowing slight smoke from cylinder head could be? Visible when oil cover is opened.
Wail.

Try decreasing the pump setting - it seems it is set VERY rich. Hence the black smoke [fuel smoke] AND the heavy on diesel ..

Nice Patrol bud !!!!

Ok... Have a look here, this is the fuel screw. Turn it out 1/8 turn at a time, drive it and adjust again if necessary a 1/8 turn again till its just giving off a slight puff of black smoke under hard acceleration or load

By the way, does your TD42 motor have an inline Injector pump or rotary?

If a rotary pump, does it have an anneroid thingy on it like in the pic posted earlier?
It shouldn't make a difference if it doesn't have it on, but will just be easier to turbo at a later stage..... cause you know you will do that right?.....hahahaha
