Tough Dog 2" Lift fitted

Post by Zantus »

I had a friend here in PE fit a 2" Tough Dog kit on Monday and at the same time he fitted some new Alfa rear brake discs.

Since my Patrol is my trail toy, I didn't want to go all out on suspension, so went for the 41mm non adjustable shock and the springs made to take the extra weight of some steel bumpers. My troll is not used for overlanding so the heavy duty rear springs would not work for my application.

They also come with a 3 year / 60 000km warranty which again suits my needs as I will never do 60 000km in 3 years.

Here's some poser pics. I've been off sick the last few days, so I hope to get some action pics and video footage in the near future.

Looking good Zantus... Who supplied you with the gear?

Also... was wondering if these shocks are adjustable or not? I believe some Tough Dog shocks are adjustable....

My friend here in PE is busy opening a 4x4 fitment centre and he is a reseller op Opposite Lock's products at the moment, so he got the kit from them. We have the three main players here in PE, but he will also be building custom bumpers and other accesories, a first for PE.

Tinus, there was a bit of rubbing at the back, but mainly when I have a few people in the car and I hit dips on a gravel road at speed. I've been 4x4ing with the 35's and no lift for a year and a half without any major issues, but the back was sagging and the shocks provided very little dampening, so it was time to replace the 13 year old suspension.

Tough Dog do adjustable shocks as well. I didn't go for this option mainly due cost as my patrol is not used a lot and mainly for trails, so to me that would be a waste of money that could go towards something that suits my requirements, like diff gears or bumpers.

I have a iron man 3 inch lift kit with caster correction kit on my 4.8 very happy. ...with my 35 tires I was hitting the top of my wheel arches big time when flexing the problem is when the shock has more reach it makes the opposite wheel rise higher. ...
When I got a set of 33 for a bargain I put them on and very happy now . I can honestly not say that there were any diff in feul or performance between the two sizes only the plastic wheel arch covers dont end up taking a beating
The 35 did look a bit better Imho

Thanks for the info Zantus... Agree, as a trail rig used seldom there wouldnt be a need for adjustables.

Tinus,... your situation with your 35's is a common issue for guys in South Africa,...The problem here is that no-one ever thinks about bump-stops and how important they are on coil sprung vehicles. With the use of the 80 series style bumpstop the opposite wheel does alot of the work, limiting bottoming out of the shock too... Always a good option.

SJC, as far as I know Zantus sold that car shortly after he did the lift. Maybe PM him on SA4x4, he is much more active there?

Yip, I sold it last year November after probably only doing 500km's since the fitment of the Tough Dogs in May last year.

It was a complete kit of 4 coils and 4 shocks.
