Re: Suspension
I'm thinking about caster correction; it doesn't matter what I do my Trol pulls to the left and I can't think of what can be causing it (checked alignment, balancing, replaced drag-link, checked panhard rod and bushes, tie-rod etc etc etc).Grant wrote:Gents,
I have had both OME and TJM on my Troll. In my case OME offers a harder ride than the TJM, but both offer the same capabilitys. These would be the only two I would consider.
Currently I have 90mm gold Edition shocks(lond travel) + coils + panhard rods, 3.5 deg caster correction and 100mm drop links for the anti sway bar.
I have OME (not sure of the lift because it was done before I purchased the Patrol) with heavy duty coils. When the Trol is empty, or just a few passengers, the ride is quite harsh and very bumpy, although she corners very well. When laden, there is not another vehicle i would ever want to travel the bush in. My OME shocks and coils with the trol come into their own under very harsh (in my limited experience) conditions travelling Mapai to Pafuri on the game reserve side in 2 hrs and 15 minutes (see trip report that's to be posted). If i ever had to buy a "standard" 4x4, the first mod I would do is to fit good quality shocks and coils.

Re: Suspension
Your pulling to the left could be solved by replacing the left hand side kingpin bearing. Have a look on the Aussie Patrol site. (www.Patrol4x4.com/forum)

I am running the 4 inch lift Ironman Gas filled, Laod carry shocks.
At the rear is air helpers (Bladders) The car here is with a heavy load and the air helpers are at 2.5 Bar.
Articulation is still good.
I am very happy with the Ironman, no leaks still perfect even after my Serengeti trip with the very bad corrugated roads.

He he he .... Wilfred if one more Tanzanian told me " no no, good tanzanian road ahead" I was gonna klap him!
It is on those Serengeti and further north roads that the better makes of shocks and coil combinations come into their own!
My preference over the years have been OME, both for coils and leaf springs.
However the ironman and IFS seem just as competent, so it boils down to personal preference - to me the Ironman was harsher than the OME, so you pays your monies and takes your chances!
But I agree, one of the first things that gets changed, is the suspension! The current OME medium duty 2" lift on the Patrol gives a great ride and when loaded I inflate the airbags to 2.3 bar and then I have a very stable high speed transporter! Yes the airbags do limit the travel a little, so I deflate them to 0,5 bar when I reach my destination and have unhitched the trailer.
My . Take it, don't take it, use it don't use it!

A friend of mine had the medium duty TJM coils at the back of his Patrol but these were sagging under load. Had these replaced by heavy duty OME and all is sorted. Your air solution takes care of possible rear-end sagging I believe?Saltman wrote:But I agree, one of the first things that gets changed, is the suspension! The current OME medium duty

Re: Suspension
Gents,
Please also remember, any thing over 50 mm will require panhard rods, castor correction, extended barke lines and diff breathers as well as extended Swaybar links and extended bump stops. Been through this with my Troll and have also seen the same problem on Tommys troll.

Re: Suspension
Hi Guys
Sorry for sharing this post, but i was wondering if i could get some info.
Firstly, what is OME?
Secondly, I have a standard suspension on my 2001 Nissan Patrol 4500 GRX. I woudl like to in the future upgrade to a 50mm lift (Not sure if a 50mm lift shock can be fitted with standard springs), but due to money contraints currently and the need to change my shocks, I was wondering what standard shock brands you recommend?
1. Koni
2. Monroe
3. Gabriel
4. Other?
And as per above, which model?
Seen the following, not sure they are worth it or if there are better models?
1. Gabriel® Safari HDP™ Gas Shocks
2. Monroe Max-Air® Shock Absorbers: Air Adjustable Shocks
3. Koni Riad (Heavy Track)
Thank you
