GU Y61 Rear Windows Mod?
Hi All,
Not sure whether anyone else who uses their Troll for overlanding has noticed this, but its quite annoying that the rear most side windows on our vans don`t open.
Its probably more of an issue for me than many others, due to the way that I designed my drawer system (quite a tall setup). I`ve recently been noticing the aluminum "gull wing" mod that some of the Defender guys do to the rear most windows on the defenders. Its obviously a lot easier to implement on a Defender because of the slab sides, but what do you recon the chances are of getting a similar system fabricated for the rear of a Patrol. I see the 80 series cruiser has a sliding window at the back, which while not as convenient as the gull wing idea, is still better than the windows not opening at all!
So, has anyone tried this on a Patrol before, or perhaps seen it done?
Any thoughts or suggestions welcome!
Regards,
Ross

Not sure how much help this will be considering you are based in CT. These guys manufacturer aluminium sliding windows for: Canopies, Commercial Vehicles, Caravans, Huts & Cabsliders for Bakkies. I spoke to them the other day regarding the replacement of my rusted sliding windows and they confirmed they could help out but would need the vehicle for a couple of days as it would be a custom job. Maybe someone in the area could pop around and enquire about pricing.

Hi Ross
Grant has fabricated steel gull wings for his GQ. Off course the GQ has sliding windows as standard, so the rubber setup is different, and I am not sure how this will affect you.
Any sheet metal shop should have a roller which can be used to roll 3mm steel or aluminium to match the curve of the side of your car, although be aware that you will have to start with a larger piece of metal as a roller that size typically can't roll closer than 150-200mm from the edges.
The trick will be sourcing workable rubbers, hinges and catches. On the GQ, Grant made up brackets that bolt on to the holes for the grab handles in the inner roof to hold the ends of the hinges.

Hi Ross,
As per many 80's and 105 cruisers i've seen round here, i would just take out the existing glass and mechanism and replace with a hinged gullwing alu plate, seems to be very handy!

Re: GU Y61 Rear Windows Mod?
I opted for steel wings so I could weld the hinges on. With Aluminium, you would have to bolt them on. I also opted for a gloss powder cote so they would resemble the rear windows.

Re: GU Y61 Rear Windows Mod?
The Y61's rear side glass is glued in place , the rubber surround is really only a trimming.
That said I'm sure you can still use a rubber to seal a new one in place.
