4.2Petrol Auto Gearbox
Good evening guys. What will the cost be of completely overhauling a 1995 4.2petrol Auto gearbox or alternatively what will the cost be to change to a manual box? Any input will be appreciated.

Re: 4.2Petrol Auto Gearbox
I changed my auto GU 4.2tdi to a manual, this not a cheap excersize, but the vehicle is SO much better for it! Well in my humble opinion anyway...
I can also atest to the cost of rebuilding an auto box as I recently rebuilt my 4.8's Auto from end to end!
Really its time for you to choose what you really want, as both will be an investment in the future of the vehicle...
This is talking in terms of a new rebuilt auto or a low mileage 2nd hand manual box with all the bits to make it work as well as the labour to fit.
Both will have pros & cons, so I recon figure out what works best for you & make your move.
Being that yours is a 4.2 petrol, the manual will give you better fuel consumption (saving money in the long term) & more contol on the trail. The auto will keep your comfy easy ride & will not need loads of extra labour for the swap.
So its your choice...

It sounds like your GQ is an import european model, it may also be worth remembering that these spec models are rare & keeping it original may be worth it.
However transplanting in a manual or rebuilding the auto will most likely cost you in the region of AT LEAST 30k either way.

Thanks for the advice thus far. It is indeed an European spec import, and the EFI engine,I did not mention that previously. Still considering buying the vehicle, just want to know what I in for more or less. Vehicle still driveable.
