Michael, you're saying exactly what I saw in my minds eye when I imagined the installation, but it seems it operates as David explained it. I can detect no binding once I set the hub to free.

I think i found the c clips every one is talking about, mine is still is in place . On the photo youl see 2 steel and one copper closest to bearing assembly

Yup, no problems so far. I turn it to lock and it engages easily, I unlock and it releases without any problems.

Just don't drop the blasted hub. I popped one off the other day to tighten the wheel bearing and scratched it ever so slightly on the cement. It doesn't take much to tarnish the finish. I'm sure they'll get scratched up over time, but I like looking at the polished finish at least for a few days...

I did the same mod with my GQ Patrol about 7 or 8 years ago. Commercial Auto Spares who I bought the manual hub locks from for about R750 for a set for my Terrano, did not have the HLs for the Patrol and I eventually found an engineering works in Langlaagte who imported them for the Patrols from Brazil for R2500, which was very expensive, but I had no option as the one Auto HL did not work and I was scared the manual side of it would also give problems in time.

What do they cost these days?

David Volschenk imports them from Aussie...perhaps ask him..

Just thought I will share some pics of how the "missing ring" looked on mine.
I removed the circlips right at the back to get the setup the same as on the pickups.

I've been preparing to replace the wife's manual free wheel hubs with original "auto" hubs, as the manual hub on the left hand side is acting up. So I've just been referring to a bunch of things in the manual, which is where the attached image is from.

It would appear that the circlip (referred to as "snap-ring" and highlighted in red) is a requirement for both manual hubs and "Drive flange" type hubs, but not for the auto locking hubs. Apart from the attached diagram, removal and fitment of instructions for manual and "drive flange" type hubs specifically refer to removing and replacing the "snap-ring", whilst there is no comment regarding this for the auto-hub assemblies.

Edit: Oh - the little crosses next to the "snap-rings" also mean: "Always replace with every disassembly". I believe the part numbers range from 39253J00 - 39253J05. Not sure what the differences between those part numbers are, as on the diagrams, they all appear to be the same.
