Nissan Matic Transmission Oil
Posted: 06 Jun 2017 15:48
About 10 000 km ago I flushed my 4.8 tranhsmission and mistakenly used Castrol Transmax Z.
I did some research at the time and concluded this is actually the oil Nissan uses, repackaged at their own.
By chance, yesterday I noticed on a 500 ml bottle I had in my oil cupboard that it specified for Nissan Matic D spec.
The correct spec is Nissan Matic J.
At the time I still confirmed with Rex Gearbox and Diff what they use and again it was confirmed Transmax Z, which is why when it confirmed by research I went ahead with confidence.
I certainly was not pleased to discover I have had the wrong oil in my transmission.
Although I’m unaware at this point if any damage has been caused.
Basically running Matic D spec oil rather than Matic J.
A few points of interest however, Matic D is correct for the 4.8 Transfer case so Transmax Z will be fine here.
Further The 4.5 petrol Patrols with 4 speed Auto Tranmission would also require Matic D.
So the Auto Transmission Oil specs through time have changed like this
4 Speed – Matic D
5 Speed – Matic J
7 Speed – Matic S
So last night I did the best I could to try and find out what oils are suitable equivalents to re-flush my Transmission.
After many hours I could get no clear guarantee that any other oil is the exact equivalent and most oil company websites refer you directly to Manufacturer.
What I will assume is fairly safe to conclude are the following equivalents
Fully Synthetic Matic D – Castrol Transmax Z and Fuchs ATF 4400
Semi Synthetic Matic J – Castrol Transmax Import Multivehicle and Fuchs ATF 4400
Fully Synthetic Matic S – Castrol Transmax FE Multivehicle and Fuchs ATF 4400
But no clear indication other than from Fuchs that they specifically meet Nissan Matic requirements, in other words no formal approvals, but rather a recommendation as suitable for use. The question really is, is the cost benefit worth the risk to Transmission longevity?
There are obviously others from Penzoil. Valvoline etc.
Transmax FE has apparently not yet been brought into the country
Semi Synthetic Matic J is discontinued by Nissan and replaced by Matic S
Prices from Nissan this morning for 20 litre containers as follows
Matic J – R 4561.08 excluding Vat
Matic S – R 5615.73 excluding Vat
Crazy I feel, where the Fuchs Titan ATF 4400 is around R 2000.00 excluding for 20 litres.
Now the reason for the actual post…
I am able to lay my hands on Genuine Nissan Matic J ATF for R 2880.00 Excluding Vat which is a considerable saving on the ‘Real Deal’
Comes in Nissan Branded sealed 20 Litre containers.
I got one for myself and ZF will be doing my Flush tomorrow.
There are another two only 20 litre containers of Nissan Matic J if anyone is interested.
The above is specified by Nissan for the following Auto Transmissions
Y61 Patrol Wagon
R51 Pathfinder (Petrol and Diesel )
D40 NJavara (Petrol and Diesel)
T31 XTrail
I am based in Edenvale and price basis is cash, collected.
Regards
