Community forum guys have a suggestion to just "smooth" it off on the lathe and then source a seal with the appropriate ID and OD. I have an account at BMG and will get the dimensions to my Rep tomorrow and see if they have something like that in stock so we know how much to take off the flange. I am just worried about how much we will weaken the flange by taking anything off it.

I second on what Peter have said and I Would go and buy the proper genuine seal from the agents and then I know its correctly sorted :oldtimer: :oldtimer:

Agents don't keep that seal. I have also called Nissan to see if they can get a replacement for that pinion flange, nothing. The guy searched but is not even sure of exact measurements to compare with what is still available for the new Patrols. They seem to turf the old microfisch after a certain period and can in no way go back. And I have a family member that works at Star Nissan in Vanderbijl and he goes the extra mike to try and find stuff for me.

I have my guys at Autozone and BMG looking at finding a seal with slightly smaller ID. Here is the standard one, and the only replacement I could find when I originally looked, was from Partquip.

So I asked the guys to see if they can find something with a 41.5mm ID. I still don't know how much strength I am going to sacrifice by taking anything off it on the lathe.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm just waiting for someone to tell I'm not going to cause trouble by machining that thing slightly smaller. Hell, I may still get away using the original seal, but doubt it. If anybody can tell my that the flange is not going to be good for the possible 3000Nm of torque I can shove into it, then I will have to go the distance to have it replaced. I don't trust anybody to weld and machine and heat treat it.

So please, anybody, just tell me the flange will still be up to the task if I take some meat off it, lets say 1mm for argument sake :helpsign:

If you give me the dimensions (OD, Spline OD, Spline ID and number of teeth, I can calculate the point of failure for you.

But doesn't that thing sit in a bearing?

Its darn useless trying to post a pic from a phone, and I dont have internet at home. I will have to post tomorrow at the office. But from what I can see the flange just pulls up against the bearing. I will also go take some measurements as soon as I get home and take a pic or two.

Not sure if my caliper can not get to the bottom of the spline teeth, but I only measure the splines at around 1,25mm.
Wall thickness with splines to the top of the spline is 7.5mm and between the spline teeth is just over 6mm.
Length of the splines is 42mm.

Hope that all makes sense. But so far I am at dead ends finding alternative seal of any spec smaller than standard at the normal suspects like Autozone and BMG.

Peter, don't worry about trying to stress test this thing, I just spoke to Specialist Seal Services and they say there is no seal available anything smaller than the one I have. She even told me that this seal must be for a Nissan, because it is only Nissan that has these strange sizes. She suggests the polishing route as I should have 1/2mm to work with, and then I can still tension the seal spring up slightly to assist the seal. Then she also suggests the use of a speedy sleeve if all else fails.

So now to see who can polish my shaft
