80-83 Safari\MQ Patrol H260 Diff Questions
I have a H260 diff from a 1983 Safari\MQ bakkie that will be going into the Sani as soon as I can get it "fixed".
I have not stripped it yet, but the most obvious problem at the moment, is the oil that runs out liberally through the pinion seal. The cover plate is also going to be needing some attention as it is fairly well bent out of shape.
Here is my questions...
Anybody know where I can get the oil seal? I have not looked further than Nissan themselves, and Autozone so far. Neither of them can help me.
Second, do you have to access, and hence replace the pinion crush washer?
I can't find too much info on the diff and how it all goes together. I downloaded a small picture from Google, abut I can't see too much on it.
This diff is the next stage of my SFA build, along with the Safari Transfer box that does me a driver side drop of the driveshafts to front and rear. I need to know this diff is 100% before the transfer case goes in. If I have to revert to centre pumpkin, I am a bit stuffed with the transfer case I have for the project. It is also a matching 4.8 ratio to go with the C200 diff in the front.
Anybody have any documentation that can help me, and info as to where I can get my hands on the seal.
I will hopefully start taking some spanners to the diff this weekend. I want to have a look at how easy, or not, the Sani front disk brakes are going to build over to replace the drums on the H260.

Re: 80-83 Safari\MQ Patrol H260 Diff Questions
GOOD DAY DAVID .
For your diff seal , remove the pinion flange and gently pry out the seal . Clean the seal and look for numbers indicating the dimentions . ( EG 55 70 10 ) inner , outer , and thickness . If there are no sizes indicated then take the seal as a sample to the seal and bearing shop . REMEMBER to mesure the seal housing size , shaft size and seal thickness before going to buy your seal . You may have distorted the seal while prying it out so mesurements off the seal may be incorrect .
The seal may be leaking because the pinion bearings are running too loose . (play in pinion bearings causing the shaft to wobble , so the seal cannot seal . even a new seal will leak after a day or two ).
While you are working on your diff , check your limited slip preload . With one wheel jacked up , hand brake off and in neutral , ( BLOCK BOTH FRONT WHEELS )
try to turn the jacked up wheel . If you can turn the wheel by hand , then your limited slip is worn out . Rebuild time ! Now go fix it and go four wheeling !
Cheers Brett .

Re: 80-83 Safari\MQ Patrol H260 Diff Questions

Re: 80-83 Safari\MQ Patrol H260 Diff Questions
Petrol, here is the Safari I purchased. It was advertised as a 83 in junk mail.
This is exactly what I got on the C200 diff that the Sani has in at the moment. I double checked that one by removing the cover and counting teeth.
I did manage to get the wheels to turn separately teday by using two half meter power bars across the wheel nuts. So at least I know the diff has not been welded.
Can't find my 32mm socket, so I'm screwed in getting the pinion off today.
I checked ratio again today after your comment. I get four revolutions plus this. This is exactly what I got on the C200 diff that the Sani has in at the moment. I double checked that one by removing the cover and counting teeth.

Cant comment on the diff model, but 4.6-4.8 diff ratio sound about right for that model patrol/safari.

Re: 80-83 Safari\MQ Patrol H260 Diff Questions
This model was known as the MQ pickup (heavy duty). But I must also add that only Reenen has confirmed that this diff was ever available in 4.88. Evidently not very popular at all.
In the USA they seem to confirm it was available in the MQ that came out with the SD33 motor, but also only up to a 4.65 I think.

Re: 80-83 Safari\MQ Patrol H260 Diff Questions
Anyways, that is what I have to work with. I am really keen to use it because of its LSD that is known in Assie as one of the best on the market. Very heavy and big. Runs in the same class as the Dana60 diffs and compares to the kit found on the Ford F350 and duallies and super duties.
10,5" crownwheel and 1,51" side shafts. Just seems like the type of overkill kit I would like on my truck. Also think I may need it with my 4.1:1 transfer reduction.
Wow this is difficult working on my phone. Our power has been off since nine this morning.
