Re: Crown Wheel and Pinion Replacement Options??
Ross, the thread I quoted above tells you how to read the transaxle code and deduce the differential type and ratio from that. No need for turning wheels and fancy maths if you have access to that!
You'll be looking for "HG41" to indicate HB233 with a 4.111 ratio.
The letters HB are for the H260 diff, whilst 39 indicates a 3.900 ratio and 43 a 4.375 ratio...

Re: Crown Wheel and Pinion Replacement Options??
Hi Christo,
Yes transaxle code is definately the easier way, however on the rear axle that I`m currently researching, the transaxle code is not available, as the remains of the body has apparently been cut up for scrap. As far as I`m aware the transaxle code isn`t stamped onto the rear axle anywhere?
Although HG41 is the ideal scenario, the 4.5 manual had HB41, so since the ratio is the same, I`m fairly certain that it can be made to work, even thought it would be the H260 diff. The problem at the moment (apart for the lack of transaxle code!!) is that I don`t know if the Diff that Wally has for sale came from a manual or auto 4.5. Not sure if the body was still intact when you bought the brake caliper....you didn`t perhaps notice anything on the vehicle that would indicate if it was manual or auto by any chance???

Re: Crown Wheel and Pinion Replacement Options??
Ross, sorry mate I can't recall if it was manual or auto.... I have a feeling it was manual for some reason... but can't put my hen on the block. I'm a little over 100Km away from Wally, but have a big family function on tomorrow, but if there has been no response from Wally by then, I will try make a plan to get out there next Sunday if that will help. I know you need this urgently.
Regards
Cedric

Re: Crown Wheel and Pinion Replacement Options??
Hi All,
Okay, some progress. Wallies diff is a 4.111 ratio (measured according to Peters method), so it appears that it will work.
Before I incur the expense of shipping it down to Cape Town, I want to investigate the possibility of paying to get the condition of the crown and pinion professionally checked out by a reputable diff specialist in the Pretoria area. Do any forum members from the Pretoria Area have a recommendation for a reputable diff specialist that I could approach?
Many thanks in advance.

Re: Crown Wheel and Pinion Replacement Options??
Sorry about the suspenders...sounds quite drastic!!!ricster wrote:Ross-man.... whats happening bud ???.... You're keeping us in suspenders...
The Diff Specialist in Pta opened the Diff up for me, and the report came back good! They recon that from visual inspection of the internals, that part is very low mileage, and suitable for use without replacing anything. The Diff should have been delivered to my local guy by the couriers late this afternoon, so hopefully tomorrow they can start the process of swapping everything over!! Holding thumbs for a smooth conversion.....
I`ll keep you posted!!
