Funny noise from diff? axles? driveshaft?

Ek het n snaakse geluid opgetel op my GQ, mens hoor dit wanneer die voertuig so oor 560km/ph ry. Dit is so n grrrrrrrrrg geluid amper soos wanneer jy duik met suurstof tenks, klink soos iemand wat asemhaal onder water met n suurstof tenk. Dit is nie n aaneenlopende geluid nie kom en gaan soos iemand wat asemhaal.

Klink of dit voorlangs is, dit is wel die klank wat ek gehoor het wat my laat ondersoek instel na die voorste wiel hubs .Daar is amper n grinding geluid ook aanwesig. Ek het die voertuig laat "free" uit rat geluid steeds daar, het koppelaar ingetrap klank steeds daar, het voertuig in 4x4 gesit klank steeds daar. Ek het eers gedink ek verbeel muy maar sondag het my vrou ook die geluid gehoor.

Ek het die werkswinkel bestuurder laat saam ry en hy praat van moontlike universals, axle shafts, central bearings ( het die GQ n centre bearing) ens ens. Het toe by Gerrit gaan kers opsteek en hom vir n spin gevat, hy het nog nie voorheen so n klank op sy Patrol gehad nie maar wel amper so iets op n vorige voertuig ( as ek reg onthou het Gerrit gese dit was n centre bearing )

My Patrol gaan nou more terug na die werkswinkel maarr ek sal so paar insette waardeer, die Patrol moet klopdisselboom wees donderdag want vrydag neem my vrou my Patrol Ponta toe.

Is daai geluid gekoppel aan die kar se wielspoed of dryfas- spoed.Maw,is die geluid nog daar wanneer jy spoed verminder en verminder die geluid saam met die wiele of die dryfas wat so 4 keer vinniger draai as die wiele.Is die geluid vir dieselfde rede daar as jy versnel.
As ek jou storie lees dan wil ek dink dis n freewheel hub,maar jy se hy loop wel in 4x4 en die geluid bly daar. Laat my dink.

Herbie , ek sou gelaaik het as my GQ daardie spoed kon kry sou n paar van jul 4.8 manne lelik laat stof hap het , moes gelees het 50-60km/h.

Frans die geluid is as ek konstante spoed ry so van 50-60km/h. Jy hoor dit nie as jy versnel nie, dalk demp die versnelling die geluid, sodra jy egter n konstante spoed ry in 4de of 5de hoor jy dit, sal more bietjie luister in 3de. Klink ook of geluid verdwyn soos jy naby 40 kom wanneer jy stadiger ry of "free"

Jules, just to confirm that the Patrol does not have a center bearing (hanger bearing) on any of the prop shafts, but the sound did remind me of an issue I had a long time ago with a center bearing where the rubber mounting had perished.

The sound is present whether torque is transmitted or not, in gear or not, with clutch engaged or not, within a speed band. It does not happen all the time in the speed band, though.

It might be drivetrain related, but does not sound like typical propshaft unbalance or universals. A worst case scenario seems to be that it might be a mainshaft bearing on the transfer box or a drive pinion bearing on the rear diff, but I wonder if it is not something as insignificant as an exhaust heat shield or a bit of the exhaust system itself that is touching where it should not (broken hangers?).

Unfortunately it was too late and too dark to do a proper investigation last night.

Silly question: Is the noise still there if you brake lightly? Brakes can make all sorts of funny noises.

Please note that the following is surmise and not the voice of experience: If the noise is there and the same whether the hubs are locked or unlocked, then it should not be anything to do with the drivetrain. So by trying it under similar conditions check the hubs, sideshafts, diff, propshaft and transfer case by engaging/disengaging 4x4?

Does your car have manual or auto-locking hubs? If it has auto-locking hubs, it might be worth making sure that they are unlocking. Lock one hub manually, and make sure that you can turn the front propshaft by hand, then unlock that hub, lock the other one and try again?

If none of the above works, and you have done as Gerrit recomends, maybe also check suspension bushes?

Morning all, Peter I actually did the brake lightly thing this morning driving out to the quarry no change noise still there, no noise up to 50km/h. Driving on our heavy corrugated dirt road to quarry i put some speed to the right foot so that everything that can shake loose come loose and everything that was loose can tighten again. Noise was gone when back on tar again, I tried a few things to bring back but no luck, at garage we took it for a drive and a very very faint noise was heard, we then lifted the Patrol and made sure no heat shields of exhaust is touching and also swopped the tyres back to where it was before service. Took it for a drive nothing! on my way back to work about 17km no noise.

What tires do you run Jules? Could it be uneven tire wear issues?
This is getting as clear as mud!

BFG 31X10.5r15, the one tyre do show uneven runoff on the inside like a bit of a wave? it is now back on the front
