4.8 is about R73K (think it is up a bit now with the rand going to hell against the $) without a madman (R10K) the 4.2 petrol is about R50K ish (no madman) the 4.5 I think is more expensive than the 4.8 because internals need to be done

Those prices don't seem to bad when one considers the pros and cons.

I see there is a 4.8 patrol on gumtree with a fancy turbo conversion

Just be careful with the turbo conversion, there are two types the one that I have gone for which is the conservative type and then there is the boy racer type where the size of the turbo or the boost cranks up the Kw and torque. This is what I call the short term conversion, yes you will get huge powers but you are probably going to need to replace the motor and gearbox in the next 6 months! Not cheap :surprised:

There is a long lowish uphill on my way home on the N1, the one from the south and exiting at William Nicol, driving at 100 I can just lower my right foot and it pulls like a truck, no gearing down it just pulls.

Ian, does your Patrol manage to do this with the gearbox staying locked up?

It seems my previous question was ignored, not sure the reason for that..

The reality is the Patrol gearbox is horrible in that on my Patrol the slightest input of throttle at 100 km/hr in drive will make the gearbox lock out.
There is a valve body upgrade that overcomes this but dont have the info to hand straight away.
Think its from wholesale transmissions - Australia. ??

So again, unless someone can relate there experience I have no way of knowing if its 'normal'.

Not sure if the extra torque at the 2000 rpm would make it worse or better.

Gearbox not going to last long towing at 100 with the box in a permanent slip state.
