Cedric, you're right on the internal part, I better get that portion serviced. Always a good plan bud

I still have the standard bumper which I think I'll keep on it for the foreseeable future, so Im sure that will help with the airflow too.
The intercooler thats going to be fitted will be a bit of an obstruction I guess, but, I have no plans of driving like Tinus :oldtimer:
Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a front mount intercooler, as long as all the radiators behind it are kept clean for airflow, I doubt you will have issues even when you get that Hin-Tinusitis-Hin disease :rolling: for a few minutes. When i'm in a rush, I have been known to push the speedo needle to a horizontal on the right without issues. But my turbo is also not watercooled which also makes a slight difference

As long as it will be good in stop start traffic, I'll be happy! You won't be happy....you will be ecstatic

Cedric

I had to just check a photo of the speedo to see what the horizontal indicates

Cedric, did you know that I am also a plain clothes under-cover reservist traffic policeman for the Gauteng Provincial Traffic Police?

You saw wat happened to the guy on social media two weeks ago when he bragged about doing 309 kph on the highway.....

I am picking up that your cell phone connects to two cell phone towers around Swartkoppies, Vermooten & Hennie Alberts streets in Brackenhurst in the evening, we know where to find you.

Look out for our blue and white Golf "R"s this week.... don't phone us, we will phone you..... :surprised:

Oh man this a subject that can keep you busy and cost you lots of money if you have this problem.

The most important things have already been mentiond, but in my experience these are the main things to look at.
1. Tuning (spesifically the turbo engines). A bad tune will make tour engine run very hot!
2. Airflow over the radiator. You can have the best new high tec radiator, but if you reduce airflow over it like an aftermarket bumper, you will reduce the cooling.
3. Clean your radiator and air condensor from seeds and run proper anti freeze like Cedric mention....... its very important.
4. Dont remove your thermostat. I see this so often and its a VERY bad thing to do on a td42. If you really want to remove it, you have to close off the bypass hole otherwise tou just make it worse.

Thats about it for the important ones, the list can be long, but every vehicle is different from another and every vehicle has its own challanges.

What Michael said +

Check the inside of the Thermostat Housing - where the thermostat bottom disc is supposed to seal...

If that is worn decayed etc. some of the water will continuously bypass the radiator and reduce heat dissipation efficiency..

This, besides other issues, causes overheating on long trips - especially long uphills

Thanks guys!

I have no issue at the moment, and I doubt I will with the turbo conversion either, but, this ‘grenade’ term/phenomenon did intrigue me. Sounds like something I don’t need to worry about anymore than any other car though.
