Engine oil over filled

Post by Buddy »

Hi guys,

After doing the oil service on my TB48 a short while ago, I noticed that the oil level is above the H on the dipstick (H is above the "H Line"), but still before the kink/bend in the dipstick.
Hope this makes sense. Just read slowly...
I check the oil level when engine is cold, at least 5 hours after last start up.
On some manufacturers, the kink/bend in the dipstick indicates the MAX oil level. Is it the same with Nissan Patrol?

I made the mistake by not compensating for the 300ml Ceratec additive, plus out of norm I always fill +-300ml more oil. This gives me a thumb suck of about min 600ml to max 700ml above the 6.8lt manufacturer spec.
Must a try and drain or is it fine to leave it? It is not going to be easy to drain a few ml of oil from the sump plug, with the risk of spilling litres of new good quality oil.

Thanx

I dont think you need to worry about 600ml over fill, it will do no harm

How is the oil level when the motor is hot? Is it correct then?

Interesting to know. I would have thought over half a litre would be pushing the limits a bit there.

I had exactly the same issue last time I did the oil change on my 4.8, but mine was just because I was careless, too much pour on the last shot.

Anyway, I got under and pulled the sump plug out to drain the extra 4 or 500mls. It was terrifying. I knew all it took was one slip of that oily sump plug when trying to turn it back in, it falls into the bucket underneath, and almost 7 litres of oil will be covering my garage floor while I search for the plug. Ive never been so nervous before :rolling:

Get a big syringe with a small pipe (the ones they use on a drip in hospital) and suck the excess oil out through the dipstick hole, it will take a while but no mess. Did it years back on a car I overfilled.

It seems that more than 500ml overfill is dangerous. Engines have some capacity for overfill. Beyond that oil pressure increase and you could pop an oil seal or cause excessive pressures in the head and get a leak there. Some engines froth the oil if there is too much and air bubbles degrade the oil.

I was always under the impression that if the oil level is too high there is a chance of the bottom of the big end bearing hitting the oil surface, and that will be a hard smack at many revolutions per min, possibly causing crank damage.... how true this is.... I have no idea

Haha same as me. Last time I did oil it was a bit too much on the last pour. I ended up draining a bit out and topped off correctly. I was so nervous it would do some damage.

Thanks for all the feedback Gents.

I will try to suck some oil out through the dipstick funnel with tube and syringe.
Really not lus to attempt draining from sump plug.

On another note, when engine has run for a while and on temp, the oil level is much lower.

Many thanks!
