Morning all
My dad and I are busy converting my ZD30 auto to TD42. The 4.2 is from a cabstar. The problem we now have is that the crank of the 4.2 has a larger diameter than the ZD30 so the torque converter and flyweel doesnt fit. I got a flywheel for the 4.2 engine but the torque converter still wont fit the flywheel. According to Nissan SA the 4.2D models never came in auto.
Can someone please advise on how to go about getting everything together.

You need the T C from the 4.5 PETROL GRX Patrol - else go MANUAL

Edward, if going auto you will need to remove the flywheel and fit a ring gear only as the flywheel is to thick.
Depending if its a standard turbo or non turbo TD42 your flywheel will be different.
From my experience the AT of the zd30 does not work well with a TD42 engine.....specially if it is turbo charged

Re: Advice needed with conversion
Michael, are there any differences in the auto boxes fitted to the 4.5 and the 3.0 models? I do have a spare manual box but I like the idea of auto better. Then again it doesnt help doing a conversion and after all the costs and trouble it doesnt work.
In your opinion, why does the 4.2td not work well with the autobox from the zd30. Sorry I dont want to put you on the spot here, I just need to get as much info from someone who has experience on this issue as possible.
Thanks for all the replies and info thusfar.

Re: Advice needed with conversion
Edward, the biggest problem is that the zd30 makes its maximum torque at 1,800rmp where the TD42 makes its most at 2,400rpm. The transmussion obviously was disigned around the zd30 engine and will still behave in the same manner.
Now when driving it normally the transmission keeps the revs at around the 1,700 to 1,800 rpm which is really anoying because you cant get it to run where the engine wants to be unless you give it beans the whole time.
This is just how I feel about a TD42 with a AT transmission. I can tell you that you loose out on about 30% power on the AT vs the MT
