Hi guys.

I have a 4.5 Patrol and want to do a conversion to diesel any suggestions? Want to put in something with more power and better fuel consumption.

Howzit boet,

I have done quite a few conversions now(mostly Lexus, ford V6 & turbo & supercharger mods) & to be brutally honnest...

Unless you have the time & knowledge (mechanical, engineering & electrical/management systems) to do it yourself. It rarely ends up being the cheaper option.

It's the small things that always bite you, like the "glow plug" light on the dash. Exhaust differences, gear ratios etc etc.

Moving from petrol to diesel also may result in cooling issues, even though the 4.5 has a monster radiator.

The 4.5 & 4.2d should swap out pretty easily & gearbox will also mate up, but from my experience of conversions & the downtime & niggles.

It would almost always have been better to sell up & buy a new vehicle with the spec you want.

This is just my opinion & I don't mean to be all doom & gloom.

I am just doing the rough numbers in my head & once you've found & bought a replacement engine & taken the time to fit it... if you added that cost to the price that you could get for a complete 4.5 you may be able to purchase a diesel & not be without a vehicle for the conversion time.

Ask yourself why you want the change? If you want a performance monster then building it is part of the fun & the school fees are part of the process, but if you want reliability a factory vehicle will always be better.

IMHO

The problem is that you dont find a 4.2 tdi to buy dont want the 3.0l. I dont want to do it myself. What is your experience with the lexus havent heard much good about it? The 4.5 have just to little power.

I do agree with you, a lot of money can be spent doing something like this.

However slapping a 6.0 Cummins diesel motor in a Patrol would be an awesome beast when finished. LOADS of power and probably pretty reasonable fuel consumption too

If it ain't broke, it can't be fixed.

Patrols weeg amper drie ton.

Jammer as ek negatief klink, maar dis my :mytwocents: :

As jy 'n sportmotor wil he, koop een. As jy 'n vinnige, relatiewe groot kar wil he, koop 'n X5 of 'n Porsche Cayenne.
As jy 'n amper-onbreekbare ongelooflikke 4x4 wil he, maak vrede met die brandstofverbruik.

What consumption are you getting with the 4.5? and what are the power problems?

What is the year and mileage?

Lots of them running around with incorrect or worn out fuel pumps for example and when corrected it becomes a different beast so let's see if we can help with anything that may be wrong.

Hi Dawid

It is a 98 model with 280000 on the clock. Consumption isnt the main problem I am getting around 5.3km/ l at 110km/ h. The big thing is the power when towing the is nothing on its own you have to gear down at ever upphill!! I need more power to tow my offroad trailor!!!
