Guys, thanks a lot, especially Wilkie for the offer to assist telephonically!
After my last post I decided to bring the car to the mechanics where it actually came from service two days before.
When I came back I got a little surprise: there was a pair of pliers resting on my carport's floor - under the space where the engine was.
So obviously the guys forgot that tool somewhere in my engine bay and maybe it got stuck in the fan and therefore damaged either the fan and /or the coupling.
They are busy sorting that out now, I will cycle there today and have a look. A typical case of shit happens.
Follow up to go.....

Re: Cooling fan stops and makes rattling noise
Ok, sorted. The mechanics had the coupling removed and it was in working condition.
Actually it did already work again on my way to the mechanics, but anyhow I / we wanted to re-check.
The play the fan had was deemed normal. There was also no sign at all at the fan of wear or cracks. It seems I was lucky.
So in the end, after removal of the tool which was not supposed to be in the engine bay everything is back to normal.

Its good news Flo and its just good awareness of your vehicle that you picked up strange noises and looked.
that pliers fell down and hit the fan you would have had serious damage
