Why does it get dirty so quick? I assume this valve and pipe are connected or linked to the air intake somewhere along the line???

Could this be due to air filter not cleaning the air properly?? I hear that the K&N type filters are not as efficient at cleaning the air as paper filters for example. Would an oil catch can, like for the diesels, not help collect the oil residue and indirectly some of the "dirt"??

It is actually quite interesting because my impression is that I have had a slight increase in fuel consumption since December 2013 until now. I might be wrong but it might be worth my while checking the valve as well.
