Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

Hi All

I just want to give some background on what I am doing

I bought a Patrol on auction with a stripped engine. After buying it and inspecting it I decided to overhaul the whole engine.

I have now received the engine block back from the engineers and started assembling it over the weekend. Of course they had to skim the block a bit and the piston height above the block are going to be to much now. They currently measure 0.27 - 0.33mm and I think I read on one of the other posts that they should be between 0.025 and 0.03?

Can anyone confirm this?

Everything under the head is basically flush, so the only spacing between the piston tops and the valves will be the head gasket thickness. If I recall the head gasket thickness from Nissan comes in 3 thicknesses. I may be wrong on this but I think they are 1.15 - 1.25 and 1.5

The protrusion is a concern.... here's a few quotes from my original post...

a) Fitting the sleeves are simple and engeneering has to do that.The sleeves HAS TO PROTRUED THE BLOCK.According to specs 0.02-0.09mm
b) The head need to be skimmed after that,because the precoms will stand proud.The specs say precom protrusion are -0.05mm.Dont try to get that,some engeneering guys get it wrong and can mess up your head and head.

I don't think the pistons should protrude more than the sleeves !!!

ricster I agree, the pistons are way to high but also they have taken a lot of the block away for some reason..... so much that you can barely read the engine number any more.

The Pistons are at the engineer at the moment to be topped so that they don't protrude so much, but not sure how much they should skim off

This is NOT good in my opinion. The thicker the piston top the better. The thinner the piston top, the bigger the chance of a hole in the piston due to high EGT's. There are oil squirters on the block under the pistons that shoot oil onto the underside of the piston crown to assist with cooling of the piston and lubrication.

Why did they have to skim the block? I cannot believe that the block was warped.

I'm thinking that with the new head and the skimmed block it would be better to use a thicker head gasket than to skim the pistons down..... even by a fraction of a millimeter !!!

why they skimmed the block is a long story..... Ill give you the details tonight.

I don't think (hope) the skimming of the pistons will make the piston that much weaker, worst case they will be taking off 0.30mm which is very little but I get what you are saying. I have heard people do it before.

While I am waiting for some engine parts I started working on the suspension a bit, getting it clean and giving it a new coat of paint.
