Hallo Beast
Ek sal n eenvoudige antwoord try.

Has anyone in SA ever turboed a 4.8.
I would love to know the details....
What KW and NM could be expected, and who are the best guys to in SA to do such a mod?

Chris, once you start talking turbos, the sky's the limit.

You can get as much power as you have money to spend, usually with a corresponding increase in maintenance costs.

Just look at the dragster crowd. They can get several thousand horsepower from an engine of that size, but it lasts about 30 seconds between rebuilds.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

Don't know of any 4.8 turbo's in SA or supercharged for that matter.
I agree with Peter, a open cheque book will make big HP with the right people.
Only problem will be, it don't matter the money you spend for big HP. The fuel quality will restrict the HP. For a turbo car boosting about 1bar wont be safe on pump fuel. Also the engine internals, the pistoncrown were not desighn for that. They will handle a half bar. This only for custom built turbo's. Factory turbo cars were designed for that.

I just finished a 4.5 efi pick-up LC with a turbo convertion. I built the hole thing, not a bolt on kit. I made the exhaust manifold, the plumbing of the pipeing and the 3" exhaust I built. I did not open the engine, I only ordered a piston from the agents to see the crown and design and sent it back. I end up with half a bar boost as planed. I also kept the std management, I hooked a Unichip to it to map the timeing and extra fuel. Also the chip control a boost controler and two extra injectors. I did not want to fit bigger injectors in the std rail. I want to keep things std as far as possible.
The power is 250kw with 600nm. I de-tune the car to 250kw because the clucth start slipping from 3rd gear. I did fit the 105series LC clutch, witch are bigger. I had Imperial Toyota Cape Gate fitted the new flywheel and bigger clutch. This vehicle only has 6000kms on the clock. The customer insist that Toyota must do the clutch. I kept the power at 250.
This pickup has all the kit you can think off. The owner only took the ARB bar off, did not like the look. It has 315 tyres on. With the kit and big wheels, I drove it twice to Knysna from the Cape. The fuel consumption were 4.3 km/l at the legal speeds.
A 4.8 with a similar setup will make huge power. I guess 300kw or more, depend on the AR ratio and boost.

Naaaaice Frans, would love to have seen it go! How does it pull at 250KW?

Rob Green will supercharge the 4.8 - it will be pricey but i believe reliable.

250kw go lekker. The 600nm make you push back in the seat. That Cruiser pull like you wont beleave, it's very strong.

Rob Green and Steve Green are RGM.( Rob Green Motorsport. Very good and well known shop in JHB. They are well known for their supercharged convertions.

Yes I hear you all but if you want n dragster get one .....
If you have 3 patrols turbo the one supercharge the other one and keep the standard one for going to the bush and you will get back with it

You probably right Tinus, but its nice to dream about!

I realised I know a guy who super'd his Collt 3.0 litre dblcab, so I called him for some feedback.

Rob Green Motorsport did his mods approx 5 yrs ago for about 30k.
They boosted ,5 atm
The result was from 150Kw - 247Kw , and 255-477Nm at Jhb altitude.
He says he has done 200,000 kms since the mod and absolutely no problems as a result.
His fuel consumption better on open road and slightly worse in town.

Says it the best money he's ever spent...

I am phoning them today!
