Unichip and Freeflow

Hi Guys

I am looking at installing 1st a freeflow exhaust and then if necessary a Unichip. Mainly to combat fule consumption. I am not really interested in the xtra power.

Where in Cape Town should i go. I am currenly talking to a Ben at SAC in Milnerton. Anybody that I should avoid en who would know how to work on a Patrollie>

It would be interesting to hear from guys who had a Unichip done whether it really does change the fuel economy. I would guess the Nissan tuning shops should know but they are more in GP , i.e. Mauss and V/d/ Linde. I also don't like just anybody cutting into my wiring loom. recently a friend of mine had a problem (Chip was installed by a very reputable dealer) that if he went through certain terrain the engine would loose power. His wife figured it out that it was when she was braking on her side as the obstacle become rough. She stepped on some of the new chip connections causing the problem. :-)

As for the freeflow, I love the sound of a 6 or V8 , but I also like a quiet car inside and mine is so quiet that I have to hoot at pedestrians, they barely hear the tyres of 2.7ton hurling toward them. Maybe I should open the pipe a bit.

Somewhere on this forum Frans Fourie (Tour de Frans) suggested somebody there in the cape for the 4.2 diesels. Perhaps you can get hold of him?

Andries my friend Tinus had a freeflow and chip done, and also changed the inlet to incorporate a K&N filter. It made a substantial difference to consumption on the open road, but in the rough stuff the consumption drops again. Also the K&N is not treally suited to going off-road. He has since taken that off and returned to the original filter plus a snorkel. Not sure what is consumption is now?

Thanks - I do not mind paying when in the ruffstuff - I would like ot get at least 5.0 average on normal tar road. Currently I get 4.0 in town and 5.1 on long distance, with speedcontrole at about 130-140km/h

Your friend - does he have a 4.8 GRX pertrol AT?

I won't go for the K&N for our applications, I think fitting one is looking for trouble. I had a discussion with one of the Bosch tekkies and the MAFS are very sensitive for/to dirt, just imagine starting of with a slightly oily induction air . The MAF will quickly get sticky and fail.

and like they say the 4.8 is not the engine size but the km/liter consumption

Hi Arnold, yes. 4.8 GRX Auto, same shape as yours. Just spoke to him, he recently got 5.8 on the way to Moz, with trailer and at better than 120. Coming back he only managed 5, but he got heavy traffic.
This is with the snorkel and Donaldson filter.

A friend of mine had the chip fitted, but it made a very small difference on his consumption. May be be a 0.5 km/l difference. We both average between 5.3 and 6km/l on our 4.8 grx auto's depending on the trips. On some of the trips we can even get close to 6.8km/l.

Guys - then there is something seriuosly wrong with mine. I've got 4.3km/l on average - all terrains. Best ever 5.4 to Cape Town and back an normal around the pot stuff, to work and back 3.9 - 4.1km/l

Maybe I am a candidate for a chip?.

Help - I need inspiration! and there is non available in Upington

Why not try a Dyno first to check if the emissions are in spec? A normal 2WD dyno place should be fine.
