Last weekend I went to the Wolkberg Wilderness area between Polokwane and Tzaneen with ORRU for training with other agencies such as Mountain Search and Rescue, Ground Search and Rescue (K9's), SAPS Search and Rescue and Limpopo EMS. I towed the ORRU Mobile Command Post (MCP) there and back. MCP's GVM with water and equipment is a bit less than 2t.

Diesel consumption according to GPS mileage there and back was as follows:
  • Centurion to The Ranch stop - 5,9km/lt or 16,85lt/100kms
  • The Ranch stop to Wolkberg campsite, driving around at Wolkberg and tow back to The Ranch stop - 4,5kml/lt or 22lt/100kms
  • The Ranch stop back to Centurion - 5,7km/lt or 17,52lt/100kms
Back to my previous post about the Madman and "om te weet is om te meet". Just before The Ranch stop there is one hell of a steep climb that made me work hard... During this climb I have seen EGT temp of 670, engine oil temp of 103 and coolant temp of 105 with boost of 1bar. I learned quickly that to get the EGT down, gear down but then the engine oil temp and coolant temp rise... To know what was happening under the bonnet and to be able to adjust to the readings gave comfort as the last thing I wanted to do is break my car..

Time for an update.

Let me first start with what cannot be seen with the naked eye.... I upgraded the diffs from 4:11 to 4:6, and honestly, apart from the turbo conversion done by Michael the diff ratio change was the best I could do. Firstly, the vehicle feels like a brand new vehicle on acceleration from stand still and when driving, overtaking in 5th is a breeze!! At 120kmh on the speedo, the GPS reads 116kmh, before the change 110kmh on the speedo was in excess of 120kmh on the GPS. The odo was 17,5% out, reading under, now there is less than 5km difference, still reading under than 100kms on the GPS. The rpm at 120kmh sit between 2700 and 2800 which I believe is in the power band, and the engine runs more silent with the EGTs in the region of 340 degrees.

My test with the ratio was the well know Rigel uphill direction south from Atterbury Road. I started at the bottom around Garsfontein Road in 5th at 115kmh on the speedo, EGT at 340 and on top of the hill as you pass the gantry and Hoerskool Waterkloof I was still doing 115kmh in 5th with the EGTs at 440... very happy with that performance and temps!!

Now to what can be seen..... a while ago the interest for flares was discussed and I ordered it for the Patrol. Having recently received them between my son and I fitted them over the weekend. It was a bit of a mission as we had to drop the Connan rock sliders for the fitment and had to make some adjustments to the fenders and in the end the front part of the pipe of the rock sliders to enable fitment.

I was looking for genuine Nissan 4.6 crown wheel and pinions but couldn't find any, especially for the H260. Would of been my 1st choice as well. Where did you source yours?
