The 4.5 Turbo
So every one has a page for their Patrol and I think its the right time for Wilhelm's (XenoBlitz) as well.
A couple of months back he contacted me regarding the options for turbo charging his Patrol.
At first I did not really want to get involved in this, because I only do the diesel conversions, but he was quite persistent and yes eventually before I knew it, it was standing at my place ready for the big day.
So without getting into too much detail about exactly what was done, I just want to say it was a really big job. It was my first petrol and the 4.5 needs much more surgery than a 4.8 for this conversion to work.
Things that were done:
Upgraded conrods
Top mount turbo manifold
Custom built Holsett turbo
External wastegate
Front mount intercooler with 2.5" mandrel pipes
3" stainless exhaust
Spitronics fuel management
Bosh 550 injectors
Custom fuel rail
Upgtaded fuel pump
Fuel pressure regulator
2.5" Blow off valve
Sojo Stailless air box
And more other stuff
From the start we had reliability as the 1st priority and worked around that the whole time.
We settled for 0.45 bar boost for now and will up the boost to 0.55 when it comes back after 10,000km for a service and check up. There are also some changes to be done on the external wastegate and blow off valve.
The result is 172kw and 430Nm on the 33" rear wheels

Re: The 4.5 Turbo
Fantastic job Michael, looks very neat and professional.
Gains are nothing short of impressive.
Is it imperative to redo the motor internals from a strength point of view or was it to drop the compression ratio?
And the big question is, will you ultimately have a conversion kit with pricing for 4.5 Patrols.
My thinking is one can buy 4.5 Patrols for silly money, the conversion, all things tested and reliable, makes the 4.5 an attractive option for those of us who like a bit of performance.
I’d really be interested to know if fuel consumption has dropped somewhat and what you envisage future pricing would be.

Re: The 4.5 Turbo
Thanks guys
Julian, the standard 4.5 con-rods are a bit weak and have heard of people sending them through the block even on NA setups so its a strength issue.
The compression is still the standard 8.5:1 so that part is ok.
An "off the shelve" kit will be a bit tricky at this stage. There were just tons of stuff to do and change to make everything work.
I think after the next conversion we might be a step closer to that point.
The 4.5 is much harder and more expensive to turbo than a 4.8 because of all the changes needed.
I think there are quite a couple of guys who can't wait to see the fuel consumption.......

Re: The 4.5 Turbo
Alright guys.. first fuel up:
513 km
93 litres
Slightly heavier than it was before, but that could very well be because my foot was a lot heavier.
Should have another fuel up on Monday and again next weekend. Will keep posting numbers.
And still an absolute pleasure to drive. I went to the store twice on Friday just to buy a can of coke.

May the road be long.. and dirty.

Wilhelm, ek dink 5,5km/L is niks om oor skaam te wees nie........ veral nie met n swaar voet nie
