My GQ and its history.......

Post by offroadbiker »

So I had some time to kill and thought I can see how much info I can get off the forum regarding my Patrol.. so here goes!!

The Patrol was bought new in 1996 from Nissan by Grant's father - 95/96 ST4.2D that was imported from Aus by IC Nissan in Springs. Nissan SA keep telling that troll is a grey import. The story changes when I show them the original sale doc.

96 ST4.2 has a Safari Turbo & Intercooler fitted. This was done at 30 000km (Safari kit fitted at SAC in 99 when they were still the agents for Safari). The Ausie site quotes figures of 145 KW and 450 Nm.

A Front Safari intercooler. SAC het die sisteem in 97 opgesit - had the 76 mm exhaust on since 36k km
• Safari snorkel…

At 330 000km and 2009 Grant joined the forum and info obtained from 1600+ posts http://www.patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.ph ... lit=caffer

June 2009 - at SAC's got 82kW and 334 Nm on the wheels. Driving at 100 km/hr to 110 km/hr get 7.8 km/lt. Towing Safari trailer get 6.5 to 6.8 Km/l. The boost is set at .7 bar and their is lots of oompf when needed.

June 2009 - visited Uthuli, and they measured up the seats for a pattern. A week later they were fitted. R2300

July 2009 - The left rear disc brake has excessive wear on the inside, side. Also the disc is slightly warped ( clunking sound when driving) and a combination of the two problems caused the heat build up on the wheel.

Costs are a follows
R 1,500 a disc.
R 750 for brakes pads per side.

Source pads locally as Nissan do not have stock in SA. Troll has 337k on the clock and this will be the first replacement discs on the rear.

Sep 2009 - changed the discs, pads and found callipers in order. After cleaning the bolts(calliper mounting bolt) holding the calliper on, found one of them to be catching ever so slightly. Changed the bolts an bob's your uncle.

October 2009 - fitted pro white rims, painted black.

November 2009 – Water pump replaced, Fitted an EGT as well.

April 2010 - Lifting my GQ with a 90 mm XJS kit. The coils and shocks have been fitted, waiting for Panhard rods as the diff has moved around a 100mm to the right.

Castor correction kit is being fitted and should be in in a week.
Estimated lift from the OME 50 MM KIT IS N ADDITIONAL 100 MM.

August 2010 - Dyno at SAC Diesel is as follows, 360 000km

92 kW on wheels at 3000 rpm
376 nm at the fly wheel at 2200 rpm

November 2010 - spent R 4,100 for a clutch (had it's second clutch fitted at 345k km), pressure plate and thrust bearing from Nissan. It is an absolute must that the fly wheel get skimmed. Prior to the replacement I had excessive clutch juddering in first and second gear. Pressure plate was %$##%%^.

November 2010 - have 90mm gold Edition shocks(long travel) + coils + panhard rods, 3.5 deg caster correction and 100mm drop links for the anti sway bar.
Anything over 50 mm will require panhard rods, castor correction, extended barke lines and diff breathers as well as extended Swaybar links and extended bump stops.

November 2010 - Other mods to date are, Gull wings (3mm steel) in the rear windows, Cargo barrier, IPF spots on the roof rack, Upgraded crystal head lights with 90/100w globes from NARVA.

Rear wheel bearings did at 340k. Did discs, pad and bearings

April 2011 - took all the seats and carpet out. Took some IRB 420 heat resistant sheeting and covered the entire cabin, as well as the gear box area. Fitted additional felt to the front area...

July 2011 – SAC Diesel in Centurion got it's 370k km service. For good measure it also went for a Dyno,
Boost set a 9 psi
Power on the rear wheels at 3000 rpm 94kW
Torque at 2200 rpm 413 Nm.
Best results ever at 370k km. Only just run it.

November 2011 - Do a complete oil change ( everything that has oil in it) every 40 k km. Change the coolant and water every six months. Fan belts get changed every 30 k mainly because the belts runs directly under the radiator hose. Engine oil every 5000 km.

February 2012 - 378000km
Owner comment - engine oil filters and air filter get changed every 5000 km. Fan belts and fuel filter every 10 k km. In addition tot his changed over a period of 80 k km, all other oils and brake fluid, changed the radiator hoses top and bottom every 80 k km.
Radiator goes in to be flushed every 80 k km as well. Wheel bearings and greasing every 10 k km. I change them every 50 K km.
For engine services my car only goes to SAC Diesel. They only work on the engine and it get a dyno run and setting every 15 k km.

April 2012 - Interior lights have been changed to LED

August 2012 - New three core radiator is ready to be fitted to truck. Better flow and volume is larger.

October 2012 - TENESOL 90 W panel fitted under the roof rack. Also a STECA PR 1010 digital regulator.

November 2012 – Front PC diff guard – 384k km

March 2013 - Just fitted power brake front discs and pads to the Troll

April 2013 - 397K KM

September 2013 - got a dual charger with two usb chargers from O/D warehouse. Pulled a cable in from the battery through a new fuse box installed at the battery. had a switch installed as well so I could also switch of the power supply when not needed.

October 2013 – SAC fitted oil cooler.

November 2013 – Patrol up for sale R130k, then not for sale…..

February 2014 - Troll got new master cylinder (Nissan) and also got the callipers overhauled and cleaned. New rear brake shoes and brake fluid.

July 2014 – 405k km - 405 000 km service and all is well. - Compression in spec, injectors in order, and power and torque as normal.

August 2014 - new custom bumper, removed the lights off the roof rack to be legal. Now have round 51W led lights on the bumper.
Fitted the Cetek DC to DC with two 95 amp hour battery's on a customer slider behind the rear seat.

Sep 2014 - New head lights have arrived

Some new additions to the Troll.

Sold the double rooftop tent, tried a clamshell and then got myself this Moremi Sport Hard top tent.
Added 2 x 100W solar panels to the tent, wired with 2x lights and usb sockets inside.

Replaced the cover of my awning as it had teared and the zip stripped.

Got myself one of those drop down showers fitted on the side of the roof rack, fitted to a Fernlock slide if I don't want the shower right next to the front door.

On the roofrack I fitted a gas bottel, 60L of water and an Alvava Gas shower.

So the latest update was a DIY project that I decided to do myself.

Power distribution panel - with a Solar controller (backup to DC/DC just in case)

Also built in a small one at the back as one can apparently never have enough power points QQQ

Re: My GQ and its history.......

Post by offroadbiker »

Long story short, my C-tek trickle charger moved on....., two 90A batteries moved on.....

So it was decision time, do I get another two 90A batteries and replace the C-tek or do I upgrade to current technology??????

After a lot of questions, and reading up on Lithium, I bit the bullet and updated my whole charging system - or should I say Ant's custom workshop

As always the work performed was of the highest quality, and installed the way I wanted it done as opposed to just straight forward.

Firstly got a 108A Blue Nova Lithium battery.
Replaced my C-tek 250S with the National Luna DC/DC which is Lithium ready, and the price at Bushpower included the monitor which was then a no brainer.

This was installed by Ant and worked a charm on the Goerapan trip and 9 day camping trip shortly after.

Next I did my research on the trickle charger that died and came to the conclusion that Lithium does not like trickle charging and neither does it like to be "stored" at 100% charged. So previously my system was set up that the C-tek was plugged in when the vehicle is not used and the charger would maintain the 2 90A batteries as well as my starter battery.

So now the question begged how do I have a system were the starter battery can be maintained without also giving charge to the Lithium battery.
Secondly, if I go camping and there is 220V I would like for everything to still run through my 12V system over an extended period without having to rely on solar as most places have nice spots under big trees or shade net and solar might not operate optimally, or I take a trailer and not the rooftop with attached solar panels.

Solution - Installed a 15A Victron Smart Blue charger which is directly connected to the Lithium battery (and not via the DC/DC as was previously the case), I can thus charge my Lit battery to full just before a trip, and also connect it to 220V at a camp site and it will keep the battery charged whilst I run fridges and lights from 12V over an extended period.

As for the main battery I will connect a 5A C-tek trickle charger to maintain it over periods where the GQ is not used. BUT, it must not charge the Lit via the DC/DC and here ANT installed a "circuit braker" for me that isolate the main battery from the second battery which allows me to use the trickle charge to just maintain the starter battery and as a bonus I can also now drive the Patrol and the DC/DC will not charge the lithium on short trips or if 12V charging is not required.

So now I have basically my 12V system set up in such a manner that I can charge via Alternator, 220V, Solar and all systems are separate from each other and I can chose when or what system will do the charging.

Lastly I replaced my backup/separate solar charger with a new solar charger that is also Lithium specked.
