ZD30 conversion
Hi,
Yesterday my recently purchased Partol (Hand grenade model) detonated.
I bought the car in January with a broken engine. (Injector failure on number 1 cylinder) It has the ZD30DI motor, so I rebuild the motor, with 4 new injectors.
reading all the post here and on the Ausie website, I decided to install a EGT gauge.
From startup, I did not feel at ease with the motor, and overall performance was not so great, about a month later it blew a turbo (was not replaced at rebuild of the motor).
I replaced that and while I was there replaced the exhaust with a 3" pipe from turbo to tail, and a boost gauge to monitor things closer.
The performance was good and the smoking was gone, but the EGT's were still not to my liking, and I still felt something was not quite right.
Yesterday it all finally let go and I knew this was terminal.
The famous no 3 piston shows signs of melt down....
Now, what am I to do with my Patrol on the now exhausted budget?
I am not sure if I want to fix the forsaken motor again. I have a 2006 Hardbody also with a ZD30 motor, but this one has no inter cooler. That bakkie is my work horse, I drive the daylights out of it, Have no idea about the EGT's and yet this motor only seams to perform only better the older it gets. (345 000Km)
My question is, will the later generation ZD30 like the one similar to my Hardbody work in the Patrol? What does one do with all the plugs for the inputs of the ECU (MAS, EGR, ect)
I would like to go the 6Cylinder diesel route,(sorry to all your petrol heads) but don't have access or funds for such motor.
Looking forward to your input to see what best way to revive my Patrol.
Thanks guys

Re: ZD30 conversion
Paul,
Sorry to hear about your loss.
It is at times like this that I just convince myself that the additional money I have to throw down my 4.8's throat is compensated for by avoiding one of these unfortunate situations.
I know Tubies here on the form is replacing his killed 3.0 TDI with another. The job is done by a Cruiser specialist (JT) in Centurion, Pretoria .
Maybe you can come in contact with him to get some guidance with regards to the plugs and sensors.
All the best with your road to recovery. My it go smooth.

Really sorry to hear that Paul.
You can contact Frans Fourie (Tour de Frans on the forum) - He does complete engine replacements, as far as I know you can choose from a TD4.2 and a small-block Chev-V8

Re: ZD30 conversion
Paul, thats very sad indeed. I think you were so close to get the Patrol running like it should.
You have spent so much already and have almost replaced everything on that engine. A conversion will cost you 50k+ and to even find a td42 engine is a nightmare.
I say put in 4 new pistons......it will be the cheapest option. Who knows what those pistons went through and in what condition they are really in.

Those high egt s before you fitted the gauge must have killed it.....my 2 cents replace the pistons and that airflow meter that is what killed the motor first time round .
I just did my bakkie with a 4.2td to rebuild those are no joke we are over 60k already .....you will be fine just new pistons

Re: ZD30 conversion
Thanks guys for your replies and support,
Sad thing is that was 4 brand new pistons, rings, gaskets set, head bolts, the whole toot.
I didn't realize that TD42 was that expensive.
