What oil consumption are you guys talking about?
Should it not be that there is ZERO oil consumption?

To be honest, i wouldn't know what is currently in the motor ? And i would prefer not to use full synthetic oil.mvcoller wrote: ↑02 Dec 2019 22:53 JUST A NOTE ON OIL!!
As far as I am aware, if your motor has been running on mineral oil, you should not change to synthetic oil or the other way around. DVR on the 4x4 Community Forum's son lost the motor on his Jeep changing the oil from mineral to synthetic, he lost all oil pressure and huge oil consumption!!I can't remember the full details, I just vaguely remember the incident. quite a few years ago.
Read about it here (I found the thread) - https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/sh ... l-warning-!!
Are you sure this vehicle has been running on HX7 all along? I run my Patrol and my Pathfinder on HX3, both therefore running on mineral oil.
I've been running Caltex Delo 400 a couple of year, no drama whatsoever. After the Delo was discontinued or changed, i started using Fucks 15w40 Truck Plus - also no complaints.ricster wrote: ↑03 Dec 2019 09:16 I was an avid Delo 400 supporter and user for the iron Maiden for many years, but one service a few years back I couldn't get any Delo 400, so saw the Shell HX7 as shown on the pics above by Tapie, and mine runs smooth and without any more oil consumption than usual. No rattle and hum noise change either. I have also had no issues with a flickering oil light.
I really hope this is a good oil for the TD42, as I've done over 50 000Km on the stuff....
Oh and I service every 5000 Km both oil and filters (2 x big ones)
Sorry to say, but i wouldn't use indy oil, our client used it in his excavator, had to replace injector pumps like crazy on his fleet - all slugded on the governor shaft causing the fuel rack to stick....Dungbeetle wrote: ↑03 Dec 2019 07:29Me agree..Michael wrote: ↑03 Dec 2019 06:39 I have spoken to expert oil guys about the synthetic vs mineral oil and if they mix or not. Aparantly its a myth that you cannot swith over. I have switched over on previous vehicles I had with no drama.
Shell HX7 is actually a blens oil and is a mix of symthetic and mineral oil........ so think it prooves the point as well.
Depending on what engine you have, what Anthony said is quite important as the precombustion chamber engine (like the Patrol TD42 and the Ranger 2.5) is not suited to run a full synthetic oil.
During oil to-pup now and then I have mixed all sorts of oils n my 4.2D, no issue now at 842 000 km
But - instances where I serviced and filled with fancy modern expensive fully synthetic oils, I have noticed the oil light flicker a few times at startup. I did notice higher oil consumption an in addition the engine for sure sounded a little harsher. With "older" spec oil such as the cheaper 15W40 Diesel oils, Midas/Autozone house brand labeled or Indy Turbo Oil she runs as smooth as cream.
So what do I do - Service at intervals no longer than 4-5 months and no further than 10K km. I use the larger GUD Z34 oil filters and buy the cheapest 15W40 oil I can get my hands on. (My Patrollie takes 11 liters of oil at service with those 2 big filters fitted !)
I think I would have to agree with Dirk here, ZERO oil consumption is normal. Cedric, get that sump gasket fixedoffroadbiker wrote: ↑03 Dec 2019 09:41 What oil consumption are you guys talking about?

I serviced old Smokey two weeks ago, and aside from her name, uses no oil at all. Last service was around mid 2018 (yes I know, way too long in between services ) and never had to top up oil. On the Shell Helix HX5, purrs like a fat government official in parliament.
