Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

The GQ with +450k km is starting to make a klak-klak noise only sometimes when slowing down to stop. The mechanic investigating the cause, suggested the gearbox removal and stripping (and lots of money). No such noise when in 4x4, according to him. Anybody have an idea what the cause might be?
