It it has only been modified so that it can't close, then the above does not apply.

I'd replace the rad cap first off with the correct temp cap, and definitively concider that it could be that the radiator is blocked up with the rusty bits and efficiency is down to nothing. Doubt it .... but definitively time for a good flush of the entire cooling system and replacement of the antifreeze..... BUT PLEASE USE QUALITY ANTIFREEZE, and NOT the cheap stuff. This is the ONLY time other than Head Gaskets on a TD42 where I would recommend Nissan Original. Or you can use afterm...

Not the best thing on a Patrol. I know the TD42 diesels are a little more water temp sensitive, but it will take a hell of a lot longer to get up to operating temp.
