Re: TD42 engine replacement options
Very sorry to hear your car is still giving you issues. I thought the 2.8 is the RD28? Unfortunately, that engine was never available in the Patrol here in SA, so very few of us have any actual experience with this engine. In terms of actually getting the engine running, the TD42 must be about the ...

TD42 engine replacement options
Hi all,
I am looking for options to do a complete engine change of my 1998 2.8 GR Diesel, TD42. Does anyone have suggestions on a good replacement model, and/or sources?
Cheers.

Re: TD42 Rebuild
I am having a similar issue to how yours developed on my TD42 2.8 engine. Drama started with oil in the radiator- changed out the head gasket, but the situation has not improved at all. There was a very poor skimming job done on the head to start, and it was done badly again. My biggest snag is that...

Re: Oil in the radiator (GR Y61 2.8l Diesel) NEED ADVICE
Is this a wet-liner engine (like the 4.2 diesel)? If so, it could just be a seal, rather than a crack? Hi Peter, I am not sure? 2.8 diesel, UK spec. I have managed to drive the car back home, 160km, went well, but there is a fair amount of oil showing up in the water of the radiator again. The gask...

Re: Oil in the radiator (GR Y61 2.8l Diesel) NEED ADVICE
Looks like things have escalated and there is an apparent crack somewhere on the block- hasnt been found, but when using the radiator sealant the water leak into the oil seemed to have stopped. Not sure how I feel about this. Basically, whether the mechanic is right or wrong, my fear of being strand...

Re: Oil in the radiator (GR Y61 2.8l Diesel) NEED ADVICE
My experience on engines when oil and water are mixing is 1) when head gasket has blown between water jacket and oil gallery, but this normally only happens when engine has been overheating .. 2)oil cooler has cracked or blown o-rings 3)the o ring on the wet sleeve engine has has perished 4)if auto ...

Re: Oil in the radiator (GR Y61 2.8l Diesel) NEED ADVICE
Doing the head on these motors is luckily not a delicate dainty job as the head is a cast iron heavy chunk of metal and not aluminium. So yeah it can be done in the car, its just a little more difficult when positioning it back onto the block when putting everything back together again and keeping ...

Re: Oil in the radiator (GR Y61 2.8l Diesel) NEED ADVICE
Is this the same guy who fitted the head gasket recently? If so, in my opinion this should be a warranty job. To deal with the mechanics of your question, it is possible to replace a head gasket in the car, but it may not be the best option. Remember that a relatively small piece of dirt falling in...

Oil in the radiator (GR Y61 2.8l Diesel) NEED ADVICE
Hi All, I have a 1998 GR 2.8litre Diesel Y61 Patrol that has been a beast for some time. It has fairly high mileage at close to 200,000km. I have had an issue with an oil leak spilling out over the engine block, but for the last 30-40,000km have never been able to locate the source of the oil, nor h...
