Gerrit, I agree that if the actuator is external to the diff then my suggestion must be off the mark.

My guess is that the problem is caused by positive pressure in the diff housing, probably due to a blocked breather. This happens when the diff gets hot and the pressure build up compresses the actuator for the vacuum locking mechanism. I had exactly the same problem in the Messum Crater with my dif...
