TD42 hydrolocked

Post by Melville Dave »

Morning all,
As newbie to this forum, I should introduce myself - I have a 1998 GL4.2D which I've had for about 4 years and has given me no problems, but some friends and I managed to drown it in Chobe a few weeks back. It was drained and restarted the following morning and ran but with a loss of compression on one cyclinder (assume we bent a conrod) but no evidence of fuel in the oil system. We drove it back to Maun and had injectors and glowplugs checked which were all fine and some electrical niggles sorted from it being submerged for an hour until we recovered it (courtesy of a Jeep - the shame!) However driving slowly back to Jozie, she started burning a lot of oil (as opposed to unburnt diesel from the one cyclinder) this side of Francistown so we decided to call it a day and bring it home on a flatbed.
Thanks to a nice insurance payout, I'm now keen to get her repaired so I'm looking for recommendations for someone who can open her up and see how fixable she is. My suspicion is that it isn't terminal for the engine (I suspect she slipped a piston ring), but I'm no Michael, so I need to be put in touch with someone who knows their way around the TD42, especially since I'm thinking of taking the opportunity to to tinker with the engine to get a bit more torque (possibly add a turbo and intercooler).
Some of you have mentioned SAC in Centurion but any other suggestions would be appreciated!

You could probably have driven that beast home .... that's how tough they are. I drove mine 550Km from Bots to Alberton with a burnt hole through in the no 2 piston....

However its probably better that you didn't due to the possibility of a bent conrod causing bigger damage to the sleeve and even the block. With a bit of luck the head is still fine. Even though the cranks on the TD42 are super thick and strong, it will definitively need a good checkout to make sure the crank is still straight. The sleeves will need replacing if the conrod bent, so might as well redo all 6. Then Like I did on mine, fit the Alfin pistons with Keystone rings so its ready for the forthcoming turbo.

If there is no damage to the crank and the head, then I think you are a very lucky man, cause you have saved yourself a LOT of money. I am not sure if the conrods from the TD27 will work on the TD42, as there is a lot of parts that are interchangeable between the TD27 and TD42. Michael will definitively be able to fix that motor up for you. He has put in the time and effort on a good few motor.

Keep us updated on how it goes
Regards
Cedric

Thanks everyone for the feedback - just confirmed with the insurance company and had a chat with Michael, though he's a tad busy just now. So now need to bring it back to Gauteng from Lephalele. Does anyone have any recommendations for towing services they can pass on?

Dave did it ingest water through the main intake to filter?... or did you have a snorkel ,that was leaking at a join somewhere?

I hope your motor gets sorted out buddy. Michael and co will take care there.

Ps: what insurance company are you affiliated to,... and do they cover such an ordeal as a drowning?

If you are with Tuffstuff or Cross Country, I think ( may be wrong ) they will cover the towing. I am not sure with other insurance companies. I am with Tuffstuff and know that they will tow the vehicle from across the border back to a repair place
